QS World University Rankings by Subject — Archaeology, 2026 edition, with 2025 positions shown for movement. Marked for language of instruction, because a top-ranked department that teaches its bachelor's in Italian or German is not an application option for an English-speaking undergraduate.

Extended from 15 to 25 in July 2026 — the 16–25 band turned out to contain four English-taught departments and three schools already on the main list, so the shorter cut was hiding real options.

The ranking

The language column refers to the undergraduate degree, which is the relevant question here. Several of the non-English departments teach master's programmes in English even where the bachelor's is not — noted where confirmed.

Tokyo was #13 in 2025 and fell out of the top 25 entirely in 2026 — a reminder that single-year subject rankings move a lot.

Language of instruction, in detail

Seventeen of the top twenty-five teach the undergraduate degree in English. The eight that do not:

Kiel (#20) — the question asked directly. The answer is no. DAAD's official programme entry for the Prehistoric and Historic Archaeology bachelor lists the main language as German, with English only as a "further language." The degree carries a German title (Prähistorische und Historische Archäologie) and the institute advertises no English-taught bachelor's. Worth knowing that Kiel's research operates in English — Johannes Müller's ROOTS Cluster of Excellence is a major international programme in Neolithic and Bronze Age Europe — so it is a strong graduate or research destination, not an undergraduate one. The BA also carries no admission restriction, which tells you the constraint is language, not selectivity.
Sapienza (#7) — the archaeology laurea is Italian. Sapienza runs 59 English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes for 2026-27 against 240+ in Italian; confirm the specific degree before treating it as an English route. Tuition is income-assessed at roughly €300–€1,500/year — an order of magnitude below everything else on this list.
Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (#12) — the Licence Histoire de l'art et archéologie is French-taught and admission runs through Parcoursup, the French national system. Effectively closed without fluent French.
Tübingen (#14) — German at BA, but its master's programmes are English-taught: Archaeological Sciences and Human Evolution (palaeoanthropology, geoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany, archaeogenetics, archaeometry) and Palaeolithic Archaeology.
Peking (#17) — Chinese. Note the fall from #5 in 2025, the largest single move in the table.
Aarhus (#18) — Danish at BA. Aarhus offers 50+ English-taught programmes overall, but archaeology does not appear among them; treat as unverified until checked directly.
Bologna (#19) and Freie Universität Berlin (#22) — Italian and German respectively at bachelor's level.

What the fees look like for the English-taught non-US options

Answering the York question, and putting it next to the others for comparison. All are three-year degrees.

Fees rise annually with CPI (capped at 10%), unlike Cambridge's fixed rate.
UCL (#3)	~£29,400 (verify)	The £39,200 figure circulating is closer to a lab-science rate. UCL publishes 2027/28 fees in August 2026.
Cambridge (#1)	£29,052 + college fee £12,411–14,500	Archaeology is in Cambridge's cheapest international band. The separate College fee is the catch — total ~£41,500–43,500. Rates fixed for the whole course.
Oxford (#2)	£41,130	2026 entry, official. The most expensive of the four UK options by a clear margin.

So on fees alone the order is Leiden ≪ Durham ≈ York < UCL < Cambridge < Oxford — and York, at #16 in the world, costs roughly two-thirds of Oxford at #2.

What the table actually shows

His list now holds fourteen of the global top twenty-five. Extending the cut from 15 to 25 added Michigan, Brown and Chicago — all already on the list — which is a good sign the list was built on substance rather than rankings.
York has since been added to the list, leaving only three English-taught top-25 departments missing: Stanford (#9), ANU (#11) and Yale (#21). Two are American reaches of a kind already represented. ANU is the one genuinely unexamined idea — Australia as a whole category: three-year degrees, English throughout, fees closer to UK than US.
The UK sweeps the top three and takes five of the top sixteen. His UK applications now sit at #1 or #2, plus #3, #5 and #16 — four UCAS choices of the five allowed, all three-year degrees.
Leiden's #6 is a fall from #4, not a decline. Its faculty has been top-ten for nine consecutive years. It remains the only English-taught bachelor's in the top ten outside the UK and US, at a third of the Cambridge fee.
Rank and cost are unrelated axes. Sapienza at #7 charges €300–1,500/year; Oxford at #2 charges £41,130. Nothing here is a recommendation on its own.

QS subject tables weight research citations and academic/employer reputation surveys — they measure the department's research standing, not undergraduate teaching quality, class size, or how much fieldwork an undergraduate actually gets.
