What to Do With an Archaeology Degree

Ordered by preference, not by probability. The professorship comes first because it is the goal worth organising an education around; everything after it is either a genuine alternative career or a fallback that the same degree happens to open. Law comes last — not because it is a bad outcome, but because it is the option that uses the least of what the degree actually taught you.

What the degree actually trains

Before the list, the thing that makes it portable. An archaeology degree is unusual in combining four skills that rarely sit together: quantitative analysis (statistics, spatial modelling, materials science), synthesis of incomplete evidence into a defensible argument, field project management under budget and weather constraints, and writing for both technical and public audiences. That combination — not the subject matter — is why the degree travels into consulting, data work, law and policy.

The reality check on the field itself, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: about 8,800 jobs titled anthropologist/archaeologist in the US, median pay $64,910 (May 2024), growth of 4% through 2034, with roughly 800 openings a year. It is a small profession. That is an argument for planning the path deliberately, not an argument against it.


1. Professor of archaeology — the goal

The path: BA → PhD (5–8 years, normally funded) → one or two postdocs → tenure-track assistant professor → tenure. In practice a doctorate plus fieldwork plus publications, with the first real job often arriving around age 30.

The odds, honestly

Published estimates vary enormously depending on what is being measured, and it is worth seeing both:

Those figures conflict because they measure different things and carry different biases — the second relies on survey responses, which over-represent people still in academia and still reachable. The truthful summary is that the real rate sits somewhere between them, that it is substantially harder than most other professional paths, and that time-to-placement is measured in years after the PhD, not months.

Supply-side context: US anthropology doctorates rose from about 350 to 530 per year between 1985 and 2014, while tenure-track lines did not grow. A study of archaeology-specific tenure-track advertisements found 547 ads between 2013 and 2023, 431 of them at US universities — roughly 43 US positions a year across the entire discipline.

Why "1 in 5" is not the number that matters

The 79% figure is a base rate across every US anthropology doctorate, and the denominator does two things that make it a poor guide to any individual's odds.

It counts everyone, not everyone who wanted it. A large share of those doctorates never applied for a tenure-track job. They went to federal agencies, tribal historic preservation offices, CRM firms as principal investigators, museums, environmental and management consulting, data and tech roles, policy work and law — frequently for more money, more stability and better geography than an assistant professorship offers. A PhD who becomes a GS-13 agency archaeologist or a consulting practice lead is not a failed academic; they are counted as one by this statistic. The number that would actually matter — the share of people who sought a tenure-track job and got one — is not what the study measures, and is considerably higher.

It counts every programme equally. A doctorate from a department that places graduates regularly and one from a department that has placed nobody in a decade both count as one attempt. His own faculty data shows how lopsided this is: across the top 20 US departments, seven or eight institutions supplied the substantial majority of every hire — Michigan alone accounted for 11 of 70 doctorates in departments 11–20. Placement is not distributed evenly across programmes; it is concentrated, and the base rate averages the concentrated and the barren together.

What follows. Conditional on the things that are actually within his control — wanting the job, getting into one of the small number of departments that place well, and publishing during the PhD — the odds are materially better than one in five. How much better is not something the published studies quantify, so no honest number can be put on it; but the direction is unambiguous, and it is the difference between "a long shot" and "a competitive but reasonable ambition."

And the fallbacks are not consolation prizes. The realistic non-academic outcomes for an archaeology PhD — federal service, CRM leadership, museum curation, archaeological science, consulting, heritage policy, law — are the same list that appears below as careers in their own right. This is a field where the plan-B set is genuinely good, which is exactly what makes pursuing plan A rational rather than reckless.

What actually predicts getting one — from his own research

This is the useful part, and it comes straight out of the faculty data already compiled for this list. Across 172 faculty at the top 20 US departments:

The practical implication for the next four years: optimise the undergraduate years for getting into a top doctoral programme — research experience, field seasons, a language or two, a faculty relationship strong enough to produce a real letter, and a senior thesis — rather than for institutional prestige. That is a strong argument for a department where an undergraduate can actually get into the field and the lab early.


2. Museum curator and collections management

Curators design exhibitions, manage acquisitions, publish research and increasingly handle repatriation. The path usually runs through a PhD or a specialised master's in museum studies. Several faculty in the research already done hold joint curator-professor appointments — Michigan's museum curators, Arizona State Museum, the Maxwell, the Burke, the Penn Museum — so this is often the same job as the professorship rather than an alternative to it. Collections management, registrar and conservation roles are separate, more numerous, and reachable with a master's.

3. Government and public archaeology

The largest stable employers in the US: the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers, state Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), and tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs). Federal work means Section 106 compliance review, site stewardship, permitting and public interpretation. Pay is moderate, stability and benefits are good, and a master's is typically the practical entry credential.

4. Cultural resource management — where most archaeologists actually work

As much as 90% of archaeology done in the United States happens in CRM — the compliance work triggered when construction, energy or infrastructure projects touch potential archaeological deposits. It is a genuine private-sector industry: survey, excavation, reporting, mitigation, tribal consultation.

Realities worth knowing early: entry is as a field technician ("shovelbum") on project-length contracts with travel; advancement to crew chief, project manager and principal investigator is fast for those who stay; and the industry rises and falls with infrastructure spending. It is the most likely first job for an archaeology graduate, and the one most likely to be omitted from a university's marketing.

5. Archaeological science — the laboratory specialisms

The fastest-growing and best-paid corner of the field, because the skills transfer outward. Ancient DNA and archaeogenetics, stable isotope analysis, ancient proteins, archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, geoarchaeology, materials science and archaeometallurgy. These are laboratory careers that can sit in a university, a museum, a genomics institute or a private lab. York's BioArCh, Tübingen's English-taught Archaeological Sciences master's, MIT's Archaeology and Materials degree and the CMRAE consortium all feed this route. A student who leaves with real wet-lab or isotope competence has options far outside archaeology.

6. Geospatial, remote sensing and data science

GIS, lidar, photogrammetry, satellite imagery, 3D modelling, spatial statistics and increasingly machine learning applied to survey data. Archaeology has quietly become a computational discipline — Marwick at Washington, Llobera's DigAR Lab, Ur's satellite work at Harvard, Peeples' network analysis at ASU. This is the most directly transferable technical skill set in the degree: the same competencies sell to environmental consulting, urban planning, logistics, insurance risk and defence analysis at considerably higher salaries.

7. Heritage management and international organisations

UNESCO World Heritage, ICOMOS, the World Monuments Fund, national heritage agencies, and NGOs working on cultural property protection in conflict zones. The work is policy, conservation planning, site management and advocacy. Leiden's BA explicitly includes heritage management; Penn runs a Cultural Heritage Center; Stanford and UCLA both have heritage-focused faculty. Languages and international experience matter more here than anywhere else on this list.

8. Consulting

Two distinct routes that share a name.

Archaeological and environmental consulting is the professional-services layer above CRM — permitting strategy, environmental impact assessment, Section 106 and NEPA compliance advice, expert testimony, due diligence for developers and energy companies. Firms like AECOM, Stantec, SWCA and ERM run substantial cultural-resources practices. This is a genuine career with a partnership track, and it pays materially better than field CRM.

Management and strategy consulting is the other route, and it does not care about the subject. MBB and Big Four firms recruit for structured problem-solving, comfort with ambiguous evidence and client-ready communication — precisely what a research-heavy archaeology degree with a quantitative component builds. Graduates of Oxbridge, Leiden and top US programmes move into consulting routinely. If this is a live possibility, the things that matter are the quantitative modules, a strong institution, and at least one internship — none of which conflict with the professorship path.

10. Law — the last entry, deliberately

Law is a genuinely good outcome and archaeology is genuinely good preparation for it. It is placed last for one reason: it uses the least of what the degree taught. Everything above this line rewards the fieldwork, the lab training and the material knowledge. Law school rewards the reading, writing and argument — which an archaeology degree develops well, but so does history, philosophy or English. Choosing archaeology in order to do law spends four years of specialised training on a credential that did not require it.

Where the combination genuinely compounds:

The sequencing point: law school takes any major. It will still be available at 22, at 25, or after a PhD — and a JD arriving after archaeological credentials is worth more in these specialisms than a JD arriving instead of them. Nothing about pursuing the professorship first forecloses law. The reverse is not true.
